  10. This periodic posting serves as an introduction to newsgroup
  11. comp.os.research.  A set of companion postings, the Frequently
  12. Answered Questions for comp.os.research, summarises some of the past
  13. discussions in the group.

  15. Comp.os.research is a moderated Usenet newsgroup created to foster the
  16. discussion of and exchange of information on topics in the field of
  17. operating systems research.  The moderator is Darrell Long
  18. <darrell@cse.ucsc.edu> of the University of California at Santa Cruz.

  20. As far as moderation policy is concerned, the following two principles
  21. are applied to each article submitted for posting: is it interesting?
  22. is it related to research?

  24. Job announcements will be posted if they are related to operating
  25. systems research; blatantly commercial postings are not acceptable.

  27. Calls for papers for most conferences and journals related to OS
  28. research will be posted.  This is fairly broadly interpreted, since OS
  29. research is a large field.

  31. Smart alec comments are generally filed unceremoniously in /dev/null.

  33. Finally, discussions are cut off when the signal-to-noise ratio falls
  34. below a certain (fairly subjective) level.  Please consider setting
  35. the Followup-To: line whenever discussion drifts away from operating
  36. systems research.
